STATION LANDING
GETTING ON TRACK WITH TRANSIT-ORIENTED SMART GROWTH

Why is Station Landing considered a national model for Smart Growth, New Urbanism Design and Transit-Oriented Development?

The Station Landing site is located adjacent to a major transit station at one of the busiest intersections in the state, and fronts a riverfront park system that offers sensational views of the Boston skyline. When National Development first viewed the 15-acre property along the Mystic River in Medford, Massachusetts, the planned office park had been foreclosed by its lender and had seen no development in over a decade.

What did National Development see that others missed? We saw the opportunity to use the assets of the site to create a vibrant, urban village that combines a health club, offices, shops, and restaurants with apartments and residential condominiums. Architect Elkus Manfredi's edgy urban design creates a main street of midrise buildings with first floor retail activity that provides a lively streetscape consistent with Station Landing's "live-work-play" motto.

Among Station Landing's planned one million square feet of development are the 292 apartments at Arborpoint at Station Landing: a new 168-unit apartment building utilizing sustainable development practices; the 127-unit Skyline condominium; a flagship three-story Boston Sports Club; and a first class office building. Exciting retail tenants such as Not Your Average Joe's, Pizzeria Regina, Starbucks and others, in addition to a bank, dry cleaner, pharmacy, salon, and spa make Station Landing a dining and shopping destination.

Station Landing's connection to public transportation is a key to the project's success. In cooperation with the MBTA, National Development conceived of and constructed the "Skywalk" that connects Station Landing to Wellington Station via an 800-foot overhead walkway. The easy twelve-minute commute to Boston, combined with programs that promote public transportation use at the site, makes Station Landing popular with residents and businesses.
